One Silver Piece - [Action / Voice]

[Arthur jolted awake, shivering. His first thought was his sword, immediately reaching for it, only to find snow waiting for him. He soon realized he was half naked in the snow. Not good. It must have been an enchantment. His sister's doing, no doubt. All he had to his name was simple pants and a strange book. After yelling for Merlin for a bit, he gritted his teeth, tightened his jaw, and picked a direction. Fortunately a small abandoned outpost wasn't too far away. Inside he found some spare clothing, some food, and a map.

His first stop was the smithy. He had intended to request a weapon, hoping to find some loyalty to Camelot. But after discovering the recently claimed sword in the stone and no staff present, he simply took the weapon back. Far be it for him to deal with thieves. The shirt of chainmail was most likely his as well. He took that back in short order as well, pulling it back on. This was no doubt a town of thieves and sorcerers. They must have abandoned him in the snow, figuring he would freeze to death. Well, they thought wrong. He would be getting to the bottom of this.

And what better place to find bandits than a tavern? He had no gold on him, but he figured he would rectify that problem once he had found his attackers. So sitting down at the bar, he slapped the bar, and ordered a cold tankard of mead, while carefully surveying the occupants in the bar.]

[Voice] (after his time at the bar)

I am Arthur Pendragon, King of Camelot. If there are any other citizens of Camelot still loyal to me, speak up. There are important matters to discuss.

Sometimes people show up from worlds who are just like our own, except for a few key differences. Sometimes they show up and they could be from centuries in the past. If the knight claims to be from your father's time, and you don't recognize him, then maybe that's what it is.

Her. I don't recognize her. But she recognizes me. [So. It's weird.]

Her. [Oh. Huh. Katara thinks nothing more and moves on from there.] Then maybe you were both here before? Your face is kind of familiar... What's her name?

[For a moment he wonders at telling this girl anything. But. What harm is it?]

Her name is Saber.

Saber... that's a familiar name, but I don't think I've met her in person. [She brightens a bit.] Still, there's an easy way to find out. Did your journal show up with you?

The magic book? It did. I've been told about all I need to know of it. It's a talkative thing, that's for sure.

I don't know if it's really magic. [/Sob, Katara, why do you do these things.] It's more likely that it's part of what the Malnosso call "shifting" - the same thing that keeps us locked in here, and gave us these wings.

[She shakes her head.] But that's a lot to take in right off the bat. I know I was startled when I saw it for the first time. But it turns out that you can actually go back for as long as Luceti has been in existence. So if you ever were here before, and she was here as well, there's a good chance that your conversations were recorded in there.

Somehow I'm not sure I want to know. Even if I am curious.

[As for this Shifting stuff... you can dress magic up with pretty names, but it's still magic.]

When I first arrived, there were a few people who said they'd known me from before I remembered coming here. It was all very difficult to believe. It's your choice whether or not you want to look back on it, but if you're trying to figure out if she's telling the truth and just from a different version of your world, it seems silly to ignore a way to find out more about her.

[Maybe it's the argument that seems familiar, but Katara's memories just snapped back into place.]

Arthur! I do remember you. We only spoke a few times, but I can vouch for that - you were definitely here before.

[All the linefacing. Her burst of memory doesn't do much to comfort him. He'd be more relieved to find out some doppelganger was running around to claim him. Then he could go find it, kill it, and be on his way.]

You'll forgive me if I don't find that comforting.

Yes, I can understand that. [...] I knew someone else from your world too. He said he was your servant. [Actually, he said he took care of you and was essential to your survival but - details.] Merlin? But he got to go home about a year ago.

Well, that just about figures, doesn't it? He's never around when you need him. [When in doubt, blame Merlin.]

[Hey, hey. Easy now.] The last time I saw him he was pretty busy polishing your boots. So while you might have to worry about doing things like that yourself, it seems like you were able to adapt to the important things here just fine. [Since. You know. He wasn't walking around holding your hand.]

But hopefully you won't be here long enough this time to adapt to anything.

[Finally, someone who seems to know Merlin. And not. This other Merlin people talk to.]

Well that is the plan. People might claim time stands still here, but I can't afford to take them at their word.

[A shrug.] My brother's from several months in my future. He'd know if I went missing this long. I'm pretty sure that time stand still.

And you may be telling the truth. You certainly seem sincere. But as King of Camelot, I can't afford to rely on the word of a stranger.

[There's a touch of offense.] I'm not lying! We might not all know the truth of what happens to us when we're here, or how any of this happens, but I've got no reason to lie to you. We're all in this together. If we can't rely on each other in a place like this, then we're just as low as the Malnosso try to make us.

[Oh, he's a king? .../shrug.]

[Well he can't blame her for being offended. But.]

I'm not calling you a liar. But my responsibilities don't afford me the ability to take you at your word, even if I do think you are honest. My duty to Camelot comes first.

[A shade of something like pained experience enters her eyes.] It can be a hard thing to know who to trust. But if you are here long enough to start to adapt, I hope you remember what I said.

If it comes to that, I'll be sure to remember it. But for now, I'm holding out hope that I am being deceived. It certainly would make returning home easier.

[Very seriously.] If you are, then we all are. I wish it was that easy.

So do I. [But. He is getting the sense that this may not happen.] I'm starting to think I'll be glad knowing where this Welcome Center is, soon enough.

The people there are all very nice.

[You might be a bit shocked when you see Rydia, but. Katara hardly notices anymore.] And they've all been here a long time, so if you have any questions they'll be able to help.
