arturius | One Silver Piece - [Action / Voice]

[Arthur jolted awake, shivering. His first thought was his sword, immediately reaching for it, only to find snow waiting for him. He soon realized he was half naked in the snow. Not good. It must have been an enchantment. His sister's doing, no doubt. All he had to his name was simple pants and a strange book. After yelling for Merlin for a bit, he gritted his teeth, tightened his jaw, and picked a direction. Fortunately a small abandoned outpost wasn't too far away. Inside he found some spare clothing, some food, and a map.

His first stop was the smithy. He had intended to request a weapon, hoping to find some loyalty to Camelot. But after discovering the recently claimed sword in the stone and no staff present, he simply took the weapon back. Far be it for him to deal with thieves. The shirt of chainmail was most likely his as well. He took that back in short order as well, pulling it back on. This was no doubt a town of thieves and sorcerers. They must have abandoned him in the snow, figuring he would freeze to death. Well, they thought wrong. He would be getting to the bottom of this.

And what better place to find bandits than a tavern? He had no gold on him, but he figured he would rectify that problem once he had found his attackers. So sitting down at the bar, he slapped the bar, and ordered a cold tankard of mead, while carefully surveying the occupants in the bar.]

I am Arthur Pendragon, King of Camelot. If there are any other citizens of Camelot still loyal to me, speak up. There are important matters to discuss.

The Malnosso solicit our aid in certain "missions" beyond the barrier. I went on one, loading and defending cargo, but there's all kinds one might volunteer for. Out there? One could run. Seems like.

Has anyone tried? Did they succeed?

To my knowledge, no one has. Most seem keen on other rewards. Doesn't mean it couldn't be done, however.

[And even though this IS King Arthur, Jack isn't going to go into any info on Hornblower's brewing mutineering plot. Not now, at any rate. Possibly at some future time. Who wouldn't want King Arthur on their side?]

That's surprising. You would think people would be more keen on their freedom.

It might be that they do not want the consequences of a failed escape attempt. Or that there's something here they'd stay for.

What might those consequences be? Death? I hear it's only temporary here. [Said darkly. It's a horrible sorcery, that.]

The Malnosso are very adept at...unpleasant consequences. They once turned me loose speaking Unexpected French. I'd no control over it whatsoever. Some they simply batter about before throwing them into the sea. Bad business, all around.

So they're not to be taken lightly. This is why sorcery is outlawed in Camelot. This goes to show where it all leads.

Oh, I agree mate. Black sorcery brings no one to anything but a bad end, inevitably. Ban it all! Ban every scrap of it!

I'm glad to hear you have some sense about you. This place seems to have sorcery all over it.

This place, mate, is the very picture of sorcery. Sorcerous types floating about everywhere, casting their spells this way and that. A man can hardly sleep for it!

And no one does anything about it?

Nah; an' all us poor peasant-types, suffering the ill-aftereffects.

Unfortunately there's not much I can do for you. I have no control over what happens in lands outside my own.

If you ask me, this place needs a strong king-type to forbid sorcerous villains who enjoy hexing people from practicing their evil magics.

[He is not forgetting that one time that Giles hexed him, last year.]

I doubt a strong king would make much of a difference if he can't even stop the sorcerers holding us here. [But you know. If Arthur gets out of the barrier, he'll give that a shot.]

They aren't quite entirely sorcerers, mate. They use modern clockwork and science-ish things as well.

It looks nothing like any science I've seen. [Which is well. Simple. And stuff that Gaius does.]

Me neither, but I'll admit I haven't seen a great deal of science. Metal men, lad. Those are apparently highly scientifical, and they're set loose on us every so often.

Metal men? Like living armor, then?

Actually...not so very different from that. Except THESE metal men are unstoppable! Swords, guns, magic--nothing has any effect on them.

A cannon might do, possibly, but we don't have one, here.

.....Picture a catapult. Oooor a trebuchet, if you want to get fancy. Now picture it a thousand times more better. THAT'S a cannon!

Sounds deadly. But I didn't expect force to be much good. Something so obvious would have torn down the barrier by now.

The barrier, I surmise, is stronger than the metal men. But aye - we've got to be careful of our armaments here. There's not such a large supply of powder and shot for the guns, though we've a smithy what makes swords and such.
