arturius | Two Silver Pieces

[A week ago, Arthur left on his horse to explore the outer edge of the barrier more thoroughly than he had before. He didn't leave with much warning, hoping he would simply find a way out. But it was a week out in the cold and not too comfortable, but he'd dealt with worse while traveling with his knights throughout the Five Kingdoms. Even so, he was quite happy to be able to return to his apartment for a much needed bath. Fortunately he didn't need a servant to have a hot bath warmed up for him. One advantage of Luceti science, it seemed. Though he considered it only a moment's rest. He would need to resume his efforts later.

Today Arthur can be seen in town again for the first time in awhile, leading his horse into the market area. He's collecting supplies again, being a little more thorough than previously. He'd had to raid the New Feather stations more than once the last week, so he wasn't keen on doing that again. As always, he's in his chainmail, but that's covered with an extra long coat on top, concealing it for the most part. He's really not that good with the whole 'staying put' thing. Not while Camelot is in peril. But there's some things he wants to know before he heads out again. So his best bet is the journal, unfortunately. Something he's more or less been ignoring the past week. Well. Here he goes again.]

First of all, I know I'll be told what I'm doing is absolutely useless, so I don't need a reminder of that. What I'd like to know is how thoroughly the barrier around the mountains and ocean have been explored. Say what you will, but I don't believe any fortress is perfect. I intend to explore the outer edges of the mountain soon, so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Failing that, I'll require a ship to sail around the edge of the barrier. Would any such vessel be available?

Of course not. I've never come across so relentlessly a friendly village.

Were it not for the continued presence of the Malnosso I would find such a welcoming place disturbing and sinister. But when one takes into account our shared circumstances, well. Nothing builds a community quite so well as a shared jailer.

Well, by that logic, all people should be jailed, then.

In an absence of any other governing bodies, if I might explain myself better.

From what I know of people locked together, it's not long before one will try and take control over the others. It's remarkable that there isn't one person in charge here.

There are those who's opinions have more weight than others, and those that run specific institutions. But an overall leader? We do not have that. And for that I am somewhat relieved.

Relieved? Why would that relieve you? [People should have awesome leaders. Like. Y'know. Arthur.]

Morale. Have one leader that you always turn to and they are taken, or sent home? Morale fails around the whole village, and leaves it vulnerable.

Right, of course. Apparently it's unpredictable who will go next.

Structuring any kind of governing body is difficult enough when you know the members will not leave, but here? It is a little impossible. There is too much uncertainty. Even so there have still been those who have become, what is the phrase. Pillars of the community. Dependability is nice, yes, but what happens if they are all taken at once?

At best, a line of succession. But I see your point.

Based upon what? Merit and value to the community? Gauging such things is difficult here. Where one might be a king in their home, what they know may not be enough to make them an effective leader in the village.

To be honest I am surprised it has not happened before. It only means that it may yet come to pass. It will be ugly if we do not prepare for it.

Ambition is a dangerous thing. It would only take one such person to cause trouble for everyone.

I do not think it has been a problem in the past, but I am not certain of it.

Almost a month now, but not quite. And yourself?

More or less the same. I suppose that makes you about as experienced with this place as I am.

Just about, yes. Though a great deal is learned simply by asking the right people the right questions. I would recommend doing so in person rather than on the journals.

Well, yes. I generally don't use this thing at all. But it has its uses.

A wise choice. More can be gained by doing without, at least in my experience.

Well I don't really agree with that, personally. There's a lot to be gained by doing with.
